J/29 Frac Jib Sheave Box
By Bob D, 07 October 2008
These photos are from Gabrielle, Hull #23. As this hull is one of the early ones, I cannot say if the design of the jib sheave box changed in the later production runs. I would think that the chances are pretty good that this design is the same as the jib sheave box used in the J/30's manufactured at the same time.

One thing to keep in mind is that the sheaves were designed for wire halyards, not rope. Thus the grooves you see in the sheaves and fairleads. And those groves do a really nice job on rope halyards.

The sides of the sheave box are tack-welded to the pins which are the axles for the sheaves, so in order to replace the sheaves, those tacks have to be "un-tacked".

As painful as it may be, the first step in the process will be pulling the sheave box from the mast so you can see exactly what you have . . . and go from there.

Rig-Right claims to have the parts available for these sheave boxes, but I would certainly call them whilst your sheave box is in your hand prior to purchasing any parts.

Cost: I had mine rebuilt by Chesapeak Rigging in Annapolis. Their price before they started was in the $425 range. When they were finished, it was $800+. 'nuf said.
