Our Friend, the Barient Winch

For those of you that have replaced your Barient with other brands, this article will not prove useful. But if you, like me, still have Barient winches, read on.

Barient winches apparently were the "standard" winch on our beloved yachts, with the Model 25 as primaries, and the Model 21 as secondaries. At some point Lewmar bought Barient and the Barient (or Barlow/Barient in some cases) went away, as did a lot of the parts we need to keep them up and running.

The tricky thing is that the earlier models (before 1983) were a significantly different design than those manufactured in 1983 and after. If you don't know the difference, you could possibly mis-match parts ... not a pretty picture.

"But wait," you say, "what parts? Ain't nobody got parts for Barients!".

And to you I say: Al contrario amici miei (or "Au contraire mes amis" for those of you so inclined)!

We have located two sources of Barient Parts, one in Florida, and the other in the Land of Oz. The source in Australia has a nice web site, and the source in Florida has a guy that knows these puppies pretty well. The info for both are below.

But first, let us discuss how to identify the differences between the 1980 and the 1983 models:

1980 - The top plate is held in place with a circlip. Remove the circlip (carefully, very carefully), remove the top plate, and you will see the pawls seated in the top of the drum.

1983 - The top plate (top cap) is held in place with a set screw (3/16" Allen), and the pawls are in the top cap, not in the drum. And to add to the fun, there is reference to a "dismantling" handle. I have the older model and haven't a clue as to what that might be, but I would think you can work your way around it.

We have some manuals (see below) on the Model 21 (and others as well) but not on the older Model 25. The major difference between the 21 and the 25 (other than size) is that the Model 25 has two bearings whilst the Model 21 has but one. We do have a graphic of the Model 25 (.jpg). The disassembly would be about the same as the Model 21.
Here is the fix "my" machinist put into place:

The sockets which hold the pawl were egg-shaped to the point that the pawls fell out. He drilled out the sockets so they are round, then put in stainless steel sleeves with a set screw so they do not rotate. The pawls fit perfectly, and the winch functions just as before, if not better.

I will try to get some photos of the final result.

Here are the two sources for parts:

"With the demise of the companies that manufactured BARIENT & BARLOW winches, almost every customer who ever purchased those winches has experienced some frustrations in trying to keep the winches serviceable. Unfortunately, no provisions were made to ensure supply of even the most basic of spare parts for BARIENT & BARLOW equipment."
